Blood Donors Needed to Combat Winter Weather Cancellations
February 16 - February 19
This winter storm season has commenced with a fury with heavy snow and ice, causing dangerous conditions for so many here in the Coastal Bend. It has also canceled many essential blood drives—further challenging the ability of the Coastal Bend Blood Center to collect lifesaving blood products during this critical time of year.
Right now, the Coastal Bend Blood Center is urging individuals in unaffected areas to pitch in and schedule an appointment to give blood to help meet all needs in our community, by visiting coastalbendbloodcenter.org or calling (361) 855-4943.
Winter weather closures and delays can take days in order to resume businesses back to normal, and it prevents those impacted from resuming their ordinary schedules, which includes blood donations. Adding to the challenge is the fact that weather models predict there temperature will remain at freezing temperatures. However, during a year when the Coastal Bend Blood Center has seen drastic drop in blood donation cancellations, as a result of the coronavirus, there is hardly room for an additional snowball of reduced blood collections.
Historically, the Winter season is a challenging time of year for folks to make time to give, yet the need for donors of all blood types remains constant. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A photo ID or driver’s license is required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health are eligible to donate blood.
