High school blood drives are a chance for the youth of our communiy to give back to others on a level that is not commonly found in other volunteer opportunities. These blood drives are a great way to foster a sense of community involvement within our area youth while providing those hosting the drive with a convenient and easy way to gain volunteer service hours.
Currently 48 Coastal Bend high schools show their community spirit by donating blood in the annual High School Hero Challenge. The competition divides the schools into four classifications 1A, 2A, 3A, & 4A/5A. Students, staff, and community members show their support for their perspective high schools by donating blood throughout the year. The schools with the highest amount of donations in each classification are awarded Wal-Mart/SAMS Club gift cards for use on items the schools may need. 1st place receives a $2,000 gift card, 2nd receives $1,000, 3rd $500, and 4th place receives $250.
Each year all of the schools are honored at the Blood Center's annual High School Hero Awards Luncheon.
