Red Cord Heroes Program

George West High School Red Cord Seniors 2010-2011

To further honor those high school students throughout the community who help make the Blood Center’s mission possible, the Coastal Bend Blood Center presents the Red Cord Heroes Program. This initiative will recognize graduating seniors who have donated three or more times during their senior year by presenting them with a special red cord. The cord is to be worn during their graduation commencement ceremonies, honoring them for their lifesaving gifts to the community. During the 2011-2012 school year, 1,227 Coastal Bend seniors met the requirements and received a red cord.  Through this recognition program, the Blood Center looks to raise overall awareness and understanding of the need to become regular blood donors while rewarding those who take an active role in supporting the healthcare of our community.

TESTIMONIAL:

"At our annual Senior Awards Program, seniors are recognized for their achievements, their scholarships received to that point, and for their awards received throughout the year.  Although many students are recognized, invariably a number do not get to go up on stage.  We had 55 red cord recipients this year (2011.)  According to our registrar, over 30 of these students were recognized that otherwise would not have been.  Their parents were sent invitations to the program so they could witness their award presentation.  All of these students were also recognized at graduation and asked to stand for the entire audience to applaud their service.  My husband commented about the impact that had on all of us.  This is truly a program that brings to the forefront the gift of service blood donation is.  Thank you for recognizing our students and for all of the work you do to promote this program!"  -- Judy Monk, Gregory-Portland High School Blood Drive Coordinator
